The Red Wings suffered a loss at home and fell to 1-3 after losing to the Rangers

Detroit — The Red Wings expected the first nine days of the season to be difficult, and that is proving to be true.

The New York Rangers completed a run of back-to-back wins on Thursday, defeating the struggling Wings 5-2.

Artemi Panarin scored three goals and assisted one, leading the way for a Rangers team that won the Presidents' Trophy last season (best regular-season record) and looks even better now.

Moritz Seider and JT Compher (power play) scored the goals for the Wings, who fell to 1-3-0.

The Wings travel to Nashville on Saturday (2 p.m./BSD/97.1), where the Wings can take some solace in the fact that Nashville was the only team the Wings defeated. In fact, the Predators have yet to win a game this season.

But the Wings need to get out of this growing hole quickly.

“It's very important,” said defender Ben Chiarot, that we couldn't let the losing streak get out of control. “It’s just a few games and we play against top teams every night. This is a team (Rangers) that has been to the Final Four a few times in recent years. We are playing against tough competition, which is good for us at the start of the season. It's a good benchmark and shows where we need to go.

“We have a lot to do.”

BOX SCORE: Rangers 5, Red Wings 2

Goaltender Cam Talbot allowed five goals on 19 shots before being replaced by Alex Lyon (15 saves on 15 shots) at 12:20 of the second period. Victor Mancini scored his first NHL goal with a long shot from Talbot's point, making it 5-1 and spurring coach Derek Lalonde to make the switch.

But it wasn't all up to Talbot. The Wings allowed three power play goals (two from Panarin) and had no answer to a Rangers attack that gave the Wings nine goals in the two wins.

Panarin scored two of his goals in the first period to get the Rangers going. The first goal came shortly after the Wings failed with a two-man lead of 42 seconds, which pretty much set the tone for the evening.

“Special teams tonight,” coach Derek Lalonde said of the difference in this game. “The highlight was their power play goals, of which there were three, to extend the lead. That was a big part of the game. “

Lalonde thought the Wings got off to a good start and had a two-man lead but didn't convert, and the Rangers began to take control with Panarin's two goals in the first period.

“That’s momentum,” Lalonde said of the Rangers’ three power-play goals. “It's a frustrating game because we start really well and they score on their first (offensive) chance and on the first power play and we're down 2-0 and we played a pretty good (first) half.”

As soon as the Rangers had success on the power play, the Wings' penalty kill collapsed.

“We’ve been making slow progress,” Lalonde said. “You get a little timid when you lose confidence in the penalty kill and the tempo. To their credit, they scored three goals from distance, but they got it and it was an easy power play, as talented as they are.” “We slowed down a little bit in our pace and our rotation and gave them something Given time to move the puck around the rim and they got their looks.”

Chiarot said: “Their power play started there. Three in a row and it’s a top power play, it’s a really good power play, and when you give them that many chances and feel good, that’s exactly what happened.”

Rangers goalkeeper Jonathan Quick, who gave Igor Shesterkin the night off, made 29 saves.

Adding to the defensive woes, the Wings have now scored three goals in their last two games after scoring six in the first two. The power play was 1-for-5, with Compher scoring with about four minutes left in the game, but scoring wasn't easy for this lineup.

Compher is confident the offense will be over.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt about the offense in our room,” Compher said. “Defense is the starting point and the most important thing. We have a lot of players in our locker room who can score.”
