The storm brings freezing temperatures and up to 30 cm of snow to Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — After a warmer than usual first half of October, northern Utah will see a sudden drop in temperatures later this week — and even some snow in certain areas.

The National Weather Service says a cold front will move in Thursday. Temperatures are expected to drop by 30 degrees and even fall below freezing across most of the state Friday and Saturday morning.

Snowfall is expected in the northern mountain ranges from late Thursday into Friday. Snowfall is also possible in the mountains in the south of the state on Saturday morning.

At least 6 inches of snow is expected to fall in the Cottonwood Canyons, with up to 15 inches possible in the upper portions of the area. The Western Uintas are expected to grow between 10 inches and 60 cm. The other mountain areas across the state are expected to receive 4 to 12 inches.

The NWS warns that traffic on mountain roads is expected to be impacted Thursday night through Saturday. They also advise those recreating in the backcountry to prepare for heavy, wet snow and rapidly dropping temperatures.
