There will be no drop boxes for voters in Kenosha County this election, residents say

KENOSHA – With absentee voting beginning today, voters in Kenosha County are returning their ballots in person this year as there are no drop boxes for this election. Residents shared their thoughts and hopes for the return of the mailboxes in the future.

Tanya McLean, executive director of Leaders of Kenosha, said drop boxes make voting easier and more accessible for people with disabilities, busy work schedules, transportation issues, etc.

“We are concerned about the lack of mailboxes,” McLean said. “Just the convenience of just entering the ballot and trusting that it will go where it needs to go and that it will be counted fairly.”

McLean met with Kenosha's mayor and city clerk last month to discuss mailboxes.

But after weighing the options, they decided to stick with their original plan of no drop boxes.

“The ability to just get out of the car and drop (the ballot) in the mailbox with no time constraints,” McLean said.

Voters like Bob, an elderly resident who uses a scooter, hope to see mailboxes in the next election. He said it would make it easier for residents like him to vote.

“It’s better for people if they have a mailbox,” he said. “I think the more accessibility you have, the better it is for older people.”

Kenosha City Clerk Michelle Nelson said her priority is ensuring a safe election process.

“Right now we have decided not to use drop boxes and have instead expanded our voting hours and that seems to be working very well,” Nelson said.

Voters in Kenosha County who do not wish to mail in their ballot can return it in person at their city clerk's office.
