Throw away those meal kits: They could cause serious infections, FDA warns

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is urging consumers to throw away meal kits that could cause serious or fatal infections.

Out of an abundance of caution, Reser's Fine Foods is voluntarily recalling a limited number of meal kits because the recalled chicken contains a third-party ingredient supplier – BrucePac.

The BrucePac recall is due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The kits were distributed in several states, including New York.

According to the FDA, Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the frail or elderly, and others with weakened immune systems.

While healthy people may only experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection in pregnant women can lead to miscarriages and stillbirths.

Reser's Fine Foods will no longer use ingredients from the affected ingredient supplier facility (BrucePac).

Consumers who have purchased these meal kits should not consume any part of them. You should return it to the store for a full refund or discard the item.
