Tigers vs Guardians live score in Game 2 ALDS: Highlights, updates

play

The Detroit Tigers want to tie the ALDS against the Cleveland Guardians in the MLB playoffs.

The Tigers enter Game 2 on Monday with a 0-1 hole in the best-of-five series after losing Game 1 7-0. The Tigers are starting top left-hander Tarik Skubal (1-0 in the 2024 postseason), while Cleveland is starting former Tiger left-hander Matthew Boyd.

The Tigers and Guardians engaged in a scoreless battle in the eighth inning. Tarik Skubal struck out seven of the first 12 batters he faced and kept Cleveland's offense in check, escaping two late jams in the fifth and sixth innings. The Tigers put runners in scoring position but couldn't get Boyd the winning blow to score a run.

The Guardians took a 5-0 lead before one out in the first inning of Game 1 and the Tigers' offense was nullified by Cleveland's pitching, led by starter Tanner Bibee. The Tigers' bullpen strategy didn't work in Game 1, but Detroit shouldn't have to operate the same way with Skubal on the mound.

First pitch for Game 2 is at 4:08 p.m. at Progressive Field in Cleveland. The game will be broadcast on TBS and truTV and can be streamed on Sling. According to BetMGM, the Tigers are the favorite at -125 moneyline.

Tigers vs Guardians live updates, game 2 highlights

Tarik Skubal pitched another 1-2-3 inning with two groundouts and a lineout. He now has 92 pitches in seven innings with eight strikeouts and three hits allowed. To start the inning, Jake Rogers walked, but that was the only thing the Tigers could muster.

Tarik Skubal continues to deliver.

Facing another jam, the Tigers ace delivered an inning-ending double play for the second straight game. Brayan Rocchio hit a seeing-eye double down the left field line, followed by a single from Steven Kwan in the opposite direction to put runners on the corners with one out. After a visit to the mound, Skubal got the ground ball he needed, prompting Trey Sweeney into a slow chopper with an inside fastball. Sweeney hit it to Colt Keith, who passed it to a stretching Spencer Torkelson for the double play.

Colt Keith popped out, Riley Greene struck out and Wenceel Perez struck out with a high fastball in another quiet inning for the Tigers' offense.

Justyn-Henry Malloy appeared to have a double down the right field line, but Jhonkensy Noel spun on a dime and delivered a strike that sent him out and sliding into second base. Boyd was retired with two outs and Cade Smith came in and struck out Matt Vierling with a low fastball.

Skubal's perfect game ended with Josh Naylor's one-out double in the bottom of the inning. He then hit Jhonkensy Noel in the knuckles with an inside fastball, but got out of trouble right away with an inning-ending double play by Andres Gimenez on the first pitch.

Wenceel Perez started the inning with a leadoff double and advanced to third base on a Spencer Torkelson flyout on the next at bat, but the Tigers' bottom man couldn't force the run through. Parker Meadows chased him and missed with a slider in the dirt and Jake Rogers whiffed on an inside fastball to end the threat without scoring a run.

Skubal continued his dominant start. The top of the Guardians line went 1-2-3 the second time around, with groundouts from Steven Kwan and David Fry and a quick strikeout to Jose Ramirez with another low changeup. Skubal has 51 pitches with seven strikeouts, with no runner on base until four.

The Tigers threatened with the first runner in scoring position, but Andy Ibáñez flied out to left and Riley Greene rolled an inside sinker for a ground out. Justyn-Henry Malloy managed a one-out single and Matt Vierling drew a walk in a nine-pitch at-bat. Matthew Boyd threw 52 pitches in three innings with two hits allowed and two walks.

Skubal continued to mow through the guards. He beat the team of Andres Gimenez, Austin Hedges and Brayan Rocchio with three different throws to take third place. He got Gimenez to swing through a low slider, Hedges missed a changeup and froze Rocchio at the knees with a fastball. In one Cleveland game, Skubal had six strikeouts on 43 pitches with no runners allowed.

Lane Thomas and Josh Naylor flied out and Jhonkensy Noel took advantage of a low changeup for another quick inning from Skubal. Parker Meadows recorded the Tigers' first hit with a two-out infield single along the third base line, but Jake Rogers flied out on the next at-bat.

Tarik Skubal was ready to be at the top of the Guardians lineup. He struck out Steven Kwan, who saw a 98 mph fastball hit his knees, early in his outing, followed by a quick groundout from David Fry to third. José Ramírez walked him in a seven-pitch at-bat, but Skubal got him to chase a changeup in the dirt to end the inning.

The Tigers were hitless in the first inning against Matthew Boyd. Matthew Vierling drew a one-out walk, but Andy Ibáñez spotted a low changeup to third and Riley Greene flied out.

Manager AJ Hinch rolls with lots of right-handed punches against Boyd. Rookie DH Justyn-Henry Malloy leads the way, followed by Matt Vierling and Andy Ibáñez before starting left-hander Riley Greene takes over batting duties. Six of the Tigers starters will hit with their right hands to counter Boyd.

“He's at the top because he's a real left-handed threat,” Tigers manager AJ Hinch said of Malloy on Tuesday afternoon.

Tigers vs Guardians Game 2 Lecture

The Tigers couldn't get anything going in Game 1 after finding all the right buttons to push in the wild-card series against Houston. Normally reliable opener Tyler Holton was knocked down and Reese Olson allowed a three-run home run on his first pitch that made Cleveland 5-0 in the first inning and Detroit had little chance to recover at the plate.

Detroit will look to even the series at 1-1 with Skubal on the mound. He has started 13 times after a loss this season and has a 9-4 record in those games. He hopes to do the same on Monday and earn the second playoff win of his career after starting the playoff run with six scoreless innings against Houston. Skubal will start Game 5 if the series goes the distance.

On the other hand, Cleveland will have an old friend in Boyd. Boyd was one of Skubal's first mentors and friends when he was drafted into the major leagues in 2020 and continued that relationship through 2023, when he was traded to Cleveland. The left-hander is 2-2 with a 2.72 ERA this season since returning from the injured list after Tommy John surgery last year and will look to keep Cleveland one win away from advancing before heading to Comerica Park returns.
