Today's Wordle #1,216 Answer: Hints and hints for Thursday, October 17th

If you find today's Wordle particularly difficult, Newsweek contains some clues that will help you determine the answer.

Josh Wardle, a Welsh-born software engineer based in New York City, has perfected it Wordle during the COVID-19 lockdowns before opening to the public in October 2021.

After his public debut Wordle exploded from 90 users on November 1, 2021 to 300,000 on January 2, 2022. The New York Times purchased it shortly thereafter for an undisclosed seven-figure sum and it became the most popular game on the release.

Players are given six chances to guess the daily five-letter word. Every time the player makes a tip, feedback is given. A green box means you guessed the right letter in the right place, a yellow box means you guessed a letter that appears in the word even though it isn't in the right place, and a gray box means the Letter does not appear in today's word at all.

If you're not sure where to start, Erhan Aslan, an expert in applied linguistics who teaches at the University of Reading in the UK, previously offered some useful advice Wordle Players in an interview with Newsweek.

“One thing I think is important in this game is the choice of starting word,” Aslan said. “It might be helpful to start with words that contain common vowels like e and a, consonants like r and t, and sound sequences.

“Choosing a word that starts with q, z, j, or x, for example, may not be the best choice. After a few guesses, you'll get more feedback. Users will need to draw on some knowledge of phonetics to narrow down or eliminate some words that they may be thinking about.
