Tropical Storm Helene forces FAMU to postpone Alabama A&M game

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida A&M University has postponed its upcoming college football game against Alabama A&M due to Tropical Storm Helene.

The Rattlers have postponed the game until Friday, November 29, as they expect Helene to strengthen into a major hurricane on Wednesday and move north toward the U.S. Several models predict Helene will make landfall south of Tallahassee.

Helene developed into a tropical storm in the Caribbean on Tuesday. Hurricane warnings were issued for parts of Cuba, Mexico and a stretch of Florida coast, including Tampa Bay, the US National Hurricane Center said. A tropical storm warning was issued for parts of the Florida Keys.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in dozens of counties on Monday ahead of the storm's arrival.

Helene could strengthen into a Category 3 hurricane before it approaches the northeastern Gulf Coast. Since 2000, eight major hurricanes have made landfall in Florida, according to Philip Klotzbach, a hurricane researcher at Colorado State University.

Given the expected size, storm surge, wind and rain will be far from the center of the expected storm, especially on the eastern side.
