Tropical Storm Milton is expected to develop into a major hurricane. This is what Florida can expect.

MIAMI — Tropical storm Milton A hurricane formed in the western Gulf of Mexico on Saturday and is now expected to strengthen into a major hurricane as it approaches Florida's Gulf Coast, CBS News Miami's NEXT Weather Team said.

It could potentially undergo a period of rapid intensification before making landfall on the west coast of Florida as a Category 3 hurricane on Wednesday.

What impact will Milton have on South Florida?

CBS News Miami's NEXT Weather Team said the track moved slightly north toward Tampa and Fort Myers Saturday evening, but it still includes some parts of South Florida.

South Florida will get a “double whammy” with this system, starting Sunday with a weaker and non-tropical depression that will then move through the area into Monday. This will trigger heavy rain for the first time in South Florida.

The second “hit” will be Milton, which is expected to arrive on Wednesday afternoon, bringing further heavy rain and windy weather.

For now, the biggest threat to South Florida remains the risk of stormwater flooding, with 4 to 7 inches or more of flooding expected across the region.

Saturday will be a precursor to this spell of very wet weather, with persistent showers and storms moving through the area. This will prepare Florida's soils for what is expected to be an increasing risk of flooding, which will continue into the coming week.

Remember: If you see standing water on the road, turn around as most vehicles only need about a foot of water to float.
