Two goals, one assist – Frankfurt's Marmoush annoys Bayern

As of: October 6th, 2024 8:15 p.m

The top game of the Bundesliga between FC Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday was a spectacular one. In the end, only the people of Frankfurt celebrated – even though they hadn't won.

Frankfurt's Omar Marmoush secured the final score of 3:3 (2:2) when stoppage time was already running (90th + 4 minutes). So he became man of the match. Marmoush had already scored the first goal for Eintracht (22nd), and Hugo Ekitike also scored on an assist from the Egyptian (35th). Min-jae Kim (15th), Dayot Upamecano (38th) and Michael Olise (53rd) were successful for the record champions from Munich.

Bayern will still go into the international break as league leaders. They have 14 points after six games – one more than Frankfurt. Eintracht is a stronger third (13 points).

Bayern take the lead after a corner

Bayern caused the first excitement in Frankfurt. But Olise (2nd) missed the goal. And Thomas Müller shot at Frankfurt goalkeeper Kauã Santos (10th). The Brazilian once again represented the injured Kevin Trapp in the Eintracht goal. He often held strong, for example in the 14th minute when he turned a curling shot from Olise towards a corner.

After this corner, Bayern took the lead: Serge Gnabry crossed to the second post. Thomas Müller was standing there, he laid it off for Kim, who hit the ball under the crossbar from close range.

Marmoush completes Frankfurt's counterattack

At this point, Frankfurt was almost exclusively occupied with defending its own goal. That only changed when Ansgar Knauff got the ball near the halfway line. Aleksandar Pavlović tunneled in with a deep pass. So he found teammate Marmoush, who ran away from Raphaël Guerreiro and finished through the legs of Manuel Neuer.

Frankfurt also scores with their second shot on goal

Eintracht equalized with their first shot on goal, which was a surprise given how the game was going. When another goal was scored just under a quarter of an hour later, it wasn't Bayern who celebrated. Frankfurt was cheering again, that was the next surprise.

Again the goal came after a counterattack: This time Marmoush outran his opponent Upamecano; he was faster with the ball than the Frenchman without it. Upamecano's partner Kim now took a step into the middle, he had no choice, otherwise the path to the goal would have been clear for Marmoush. So the pass path to the right was clear. Additionally, Marmoush played on Ekitike, who completed Eiskalt. This was a nuisance for Neuer in the Bayern goal – possibly also because he was tunneled for the second time in this game.

Turbulent afternoon for Bayern's Upamecano

However, Eintracht Frankfurt did not defend their lead for long; it lasted less than 180 seconds. After a corner, Olise shot first, but it was blocked. The ball then fell at Upamecano's feet – and the traffic equalized.

When Olise did Olise things

Shortly after the break, FC Bayern celebrated again – and Upamecano was involved again. This time he won the ball deep in Frankfurt's half. This is how Guerreiro got to the ball and played it deep to Harry Kane, who replaced Olise with his heel. And then Olise did Olise things: He put the ball on his left foot. His goal was the left corner – and that's exactly where his shot landed. Kauã Santos whip in vain.

Bayern then had a few more chances, but they were unable to score a fourth goal. Also because Kauã Santos made strong saves twice: first he saved a free kick that Joshua Kimmich had taken at the short corner (56th). He then fished substitute Kingsley Coman's long-range shot from the corner (76').

Marmoush provides the final point

And this carelessness in finishing the goal was to take revenge: when stoppage time was already running and there was much to suggest a victory for Bayern, a sixth goal was scored, this time again for Frankfurt. Éric Dina-Ebimbe extended from the center circle into the path of Marmoush, who was again too fast for Munich's defense. So he appears again, this time he hits the bottom left corner.

The thigh – Munich's Kane has to go

When Marmoush scored and only Frankfurt was celebrating, Kane was no longer playing. He was injured in the 69th minute, apparently to his right thigh. Two minutes later, coach Vincent Kompany took him off the field. He will also hope that striker Kane's injury is not serious so that he can play again after the international break.

Then Bayern will meet VfB Stuttgart in the top game on Saturday (October 19, 2024, from 6:30 p.m.). A few hours earlier, Frankfurt faced Bayer Leverkusen. Not a bad game either.
