Update: Freeze warning for Cayuga and Oswego counties until Friday morning

At 10:05 p.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service issued an updated freeze warning that was in effect until 10 a.m. Friday for Cayuga and Oswego counties.

The weather service states: “Temperatures around 30 degrees will lead to frost formation.”

“Frost could destroy sensitive open-air vegetation if left unprotected,” explains the weather service. “Take steps now to protect sensitive plants from the cold.”

Frost warning – that’s what it means

Frost warnings are issued from May to October (but can be extended if necessary) when temperatures, winds and sky cover favor frost development. This is most likely when the temperature is 36 degrees or less. In some cases, the frost is severe enough to end the growing season and is then referred to as a “killing frost.”

According to the weather service, if your area is under a frost warning, cover sensitive plants before the sun goes down to retain heat near the plants, or bring plants indoors overnight if possible.

Advance Local Weather Alerts is a service from United Robots that uses machine learning to compile the latest data from the National Weather Service.
