Warren Mott homecoming residents evacuated after reports of gunfire – Macomb Daily

School officials and police said reports of a shooting Saturday night at a homecoming dance at Warren Mott High School turned out to be a false alarm.

“There were reports of gunshots and injuries this evening, including a police officer,” Superintendent John Bernia said in a statement to the county council late Saturday. “There is no evidence that these statements are true.”

Police responded to the high school on 12 Mile Road in Ryan around 9:20 p.m. Saturday to respond to calls of shots fired. Officers asked the public not to enter the area.

However, the police department subsequently posted an update on its Facebook page saying there was no evidence of a shooting and no victims were known.

According to Warren Consolidated Schools, police responded with full force, took control of the situation and evacuated the school.

“Warren Police reported to us that students called 911 when they heard balloons popping during the dance,” Bernia said in his statement. “The high volume of calls prompted the major police response.”

Officers remained at the high school until late Saturday.

Police had previously provided student pickup information and directed parents and guardians to Beer Middle School on Martin Road near Downland Street.

Warren Con Schools administrators have arranged for the high school's crisis team to assist students who may need some support when they return to school on Monday.

“A Homecoming crisis response due to a false alarm is troubling for students and staff alike, especially after recent events at our school,” Bernia said.
