Wasatch is once again under a winter storm warning as it is snowing and temperatures are below freezing

ABC4 meteorologist Nate Larson said the Wasatch Back could see rain and thunderstorms as early as Wednesday night.

The National Weather Service reports that rain will turn to snow on Thursday and temperatures will drop to around 30 degrees. The heaviest snowfall is expected Thursday night into Friday morning.

“Friday will feel like a rapid transition from late summer temperatures to near winter temperatures,” Larson said. “Even for Park City, minor accumulations are possible as the snow depth will drop to around 5,000 feet Friday morning, which would translate to about two to three, perhaps four inches of snow depth for Park City.”

Lower elevations like Heber will see less snow, perhaps an inch or two.

Snow is expected in the Wasatch Mountains south of Interstate 80. At higher elevations it could be up to 12 inches locally, with more than 20 inches possible in the upper Cottonwoods.

Travelers should expect traffic disruptions on Thursday and Friday as roads, bridges and overpasses become slippery and dangerous. The weather service expects the worst road conditions for Thursday night.

Larson said there will be some lingering, isolated showers in Park City and Heber on Saturday and Sunday.

The winter weather will change early next week. After that, the weather service said it could be a while before another storm returns to the Wasatch Back.
