Saudi Pro League leaders Al-Hilal are set to enjoy a major boost this week with Brazil international Neymar expected to return a year after tearing his cruciate ligament.

Neymar will be available for selection in Al-Hilal's AFC Champions League game against Emirati club Al Ain on Monday as they look to extend their lead at the top of Group B after winning both of their opening games of the season. Al-Hilal has been without Neymar for about a year after he sustained the long-term injury while playing for Brazil. The club announced on Saturday that Neymar would return through a video on social media in which he said: “I know you are worried. I am too. I’ll be back on October 21st.”

Before Neymar returns to the pitch after a year away, here's what you need to know.

Neymar returns

Neymar last played on October 13, 2023, when he tore his cruciate ligament in Brazil's 2-0 loss to Uruguay in World Cup qualifying, just months after joining Al-Hilal in the most high-profile move to the Gulf state in a long time Summer of spending for Saudi Pro League teams.

After the longest break of his career, he has only played five games for the club and tells of the difficulties of a long defeat.

“I was in tremendous pain and I already knew it was serious,” he said, according to BeIN Sports. “What I love most in life is playing football. I suffer every day because I can't. I won't give up.

It is unclear how big a role Neymar will play in his first game given the length of his spell on the sidelines and the severity of the injury, although he has been training with Al-Hilal since September 29, according to ESPN.
