“We have to look each other in the face”

A visibly frustrated Matteo Gabbia gave an honest assessment after tonight's defeat to Fiorentina, admitting that AC Milan were far from being at their best and needed to do some soul searching.

Milan's winning streak in Serie A ended on Sunday evening lost 2-1 against Fiorentina at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in a dramatic encounter in which there were three penalties – all missed – and three goals and a late red card for Theo Hernandez.

Moise Kean was the first player to save a penalty after Theo Dodo fouled, then Yacine Adli – the Milan loanee – put the hosts ahead. Theo and Tammy Abraham saw penalties that De Gea saved, Christian Pulisic equalized with a great volley but Albert Gudmundsson won it for La Viola.

Gabbia spoke to DAZN immediately after the game and did not hide his disappointment at the damaging result before the international break. His comments were relayed by MilanNews.

Was there a lack of determination?

“We are not happy with the way we approached the team. We feel the defeat, it weighs on us, on a team that didn’t give their best tonight.”

Why can't you be consistent?

“It’s something to talk about in the locker room. We have to look at each other's faces and understand why we played the way we did. We lacked the consistency we needed to win. We need to look each other in the face and understand where we went wrong. It has to start with ourselves.

“In the locker room I saw the right amount of anger and the right amount of disappointment. There is nothing positive, we have nothing to take away (no points) but the team is still united and angry about the game we played tonight.”

How much does the second goal hurt as a defender?

“We made a mistake in the department. It was a long deficit, we know De Gea is having a good game. Obviously there is no denying that there was a bad read, there were many different things that could have been done in the department. It really hurts, it’s a goal that we can’t accept.”
