What is the “PS” heart patch on the San Diego Padres uniform?

This year, all San Diego Padres uniforms feature a subtle heart symbol with the letters “PS” near the jersey collar. As the Padres head into fall baseball fun in the 2024 postseason, the commemorative patch is catching the attention of fans who may not have noticed it during the regular season.

The patch is placed to honor one of the most important figures in Padres history.

The “PS” patch was added to remember and honor Peter Seidler, the franchise's late chairman since 2012, when he and two partners joined forces to purchase the team. Seidler, 63, died in November. He was revered by Padres fans and the San Diego community for his commitment to the team and its success. The ownership group of which he was heavily involved invested heavily in the roster and ballpark, making it a true cornerstone of the San Diego community.

In the 13 years under Seidler's leadership, the team made the playoffs three times and reached the NLCS. In the 13 years before Seidler and the new group came along, the Padres only made the postseason twice and never made it past the NLDS. Three of the ten most successful Padres seasons (measured by win percentage) came during the Seidler ownership era.

Seidler survived two battles with cancer; the family did not disclose a cause of death.
