What to expect when early voting begins?

We are exactly three weeks away from the 2024 US presidential election. Florida voters will vote for their presidential candidate, select local candidates and decide on six state amendments.

While early voting is already underway in some states, most Floridians will have to wait until October 21 to begin voting. Those who would prefer to vote by postal vote have until October 24th, 5:00 p.m. to submit their postal vote application.

What is early voting?

Early voting is when a person casts their vote before election day. The process is more or less the same as November 5th, with the same ballots being inserted into the same machine that was used on the official date. The advantage is that the mandatory 10-day deadline gives you more flexibility in deciding when you can vote. This also means shorter lines – or in many cases even no lines.

When does early voting take place in Florida?

Florida requires early voting to begin on the 10th day before the election, but counties have the option to offer early voting up to 15 days before the election. Early voting time must be at least eight hours each day, but not more than 12 hours.

Many counties, such as Escambia and Santa Rosa, are opting to start Oct. 21, the earliest date allowed. Exact dates and times depend on the county. However, you can find this information on your local elections official's website under the Early Voting section.

When are early voting times in Florida?

Polling locations throughout Florida typically operate early voting hours daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. However, these times are not observed in all districts. Be sure to check with your local election supervisory office for the correct times. You can find a link to the respective district offices below.

When is Election Day 2024?

Election Day for the 2024 general election is November 5th from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Do I need an ID to vote early in Florida?

To cast a vote at an early voting site, you will need a photo ID. Acceptable IDs include:

Florida driver's license
Florida ID card (issued by DHSMV)
US passport
Debit or credit card
Military ID
Student ID card
ID of the retirement home
Neighborhood association ID
Public assistance card
Veteran Health ID (issued by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs)
Concealed Weapons License (issued in accordance with FS 790.06)
Employee identification card issued by a branch, department, agency, or corporation of the federal government, state, county, or municipality.

If your photo ID does not contain a signature, you will be asked to provide another ID with your signature.

How to request an absentee ballot in Florida

There are various ways to request a vote by postal vote.

If you do not want to submit your application online, you can use form DS-DE 160. You can complete this form and email, fax, or scan and attach the document to an email to the Returning Officer. You can also fill out the form in person at the returning officer's office or by telephone.

To submit your application online, follow the same steps we listed above to verify your voter status.

Your request must contain the following information:

The voter's name
The voter's date of birth
The voter's address (A signed written request is required if the address is different from the address on file. An exception is made for absentee voters in uniform or foreign voters seeking to cast a vote by mail.)
The voter's Florida driver's license, Florida ID card, or the last four digits of the voter's Social Security number, whichever can be verified in the supervisor's records
The voter's signature (if the request is in writing)
