As temperatures drop, millions of Americans are preparing to turn back their clocks as Daylight Saving Time comes to an end.

Here's what you should know about the practice:

What is Daylight Saving Time?

Daylight saving time moves the clock forward by one hour in the warmer months, typically in the spring, and back by one hour in the fall. The process is commonly referred to as “jumping forward” and “falling back.”

The main goal of DST is to maximize the use of natural daylight and adapt people's waking hours to the available sunlight.

When do we fall behind in 2024?

Daylight Saving Time ends for the year at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 3rd. You'll set your clocks back an hour, gain an hour of sleep, and enjoy earlier sunrises and sunsets.

What is the Sunshine Protection Act?

The Sunshine Protection Act passed the Senate unanimously on March 15, 2022. The bill introduced by Senator Marco Rubio would abolish the time change. If it goes into effect, we would have daylight saving time all year round, instead of just eight months. However, this bill has stalled. It didn't get through the U.S. House of Representatives.

Origins of Daylight Saving Time

In the early 20th century, daylight saving time emerged as a practice aimed at maximizing daylight during the longer days of spring and summer. The concept was first proposed by Benjamin Franklin in 1784 and suggested that setting clocks could save energy by reducing the need for artificial lighting.

The idea gained traction during World War I, when several countries, including Germany and the United Kingdom, adopted daylight saving time as a wartime measure to conserve energy. The United States introduced daylight saving time in 1918, but abandoned it after the war and then reintroduced it during World War II.
