Where will the No. 8 Rebels land in the top 25?

play

Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss football suffered a major blow to their chances of qualifying for the 12-team College Football Playoff on Saturday.

The No. 8 Rebels fell 29-26 to No. 10 LSU in overtime in the Magnolia Bowl in Baton Rouge, handing a team with preseason playoff expectations its second loss in seven weeks. Tigers quarterback Garrett Nussmeier fired a touchdown strike to Kyren Lacy for the game-winning touchdown after Ole Miss settled for a 57-yard field goal from Caden Davis in overtime.

The Rebels had two separate 10-point leads and allowed the Tigers to tie the game with 37 seconds left on a 23-yard pass from Nussmeier to Aaron Anderson in the fourth quarter. Although Kiffin entered the season as the preseason favorite to qualify for the College Football Playoff, the odds are now looking good as Kiffin looks for answers for his team awaiting a bye in Week 8.

How far will the Rebels' loss at LSU drop them in the USA LBM Coaches Poll and AP Top 25 Rankings heading into Week 8? Here's a look at the possibilities:

Ole Miss football rankings: Where will the Rebels finish in the top 25?

Ole Miss opened the season ranked No. 6 in the coaches poll with high expectations under Kiffin. After a 4-0 start, the Rebels were ranked No. 5 most of the season. After a surprising 20-17 road loss to unranked Kentucky, the Rebels fell to No. 11 in the polls and jumped up last week back to No. 8 with a strong win against South Carolina.

However, this week's loss hurts Ole Miss' chances of getting back into the playoff discussion, as Michigan was the only two-loss team entering Week 7 of the college football season ranked. The Rebels are unlikely to fall out of the top 25 overall, but falling out of the top 20 is certainly possible.

The Rebels enter an open week in Week 8 and return to action against No. 16 Oklahoma, which also lost its second game on Saturday. The Rebels have a big showdown against No. 4 Georgia on Nov. 9, likely their last chance to prove they can be a playoff team.
