Who is Noel Tata, the new chairman of Tata Trust?

Meet Noel Tata, the new Chairman of Tata Trusts.

New Delhi:
Noel Tata was appointed chairman of Tata Trust, the philanthropic arm of the Tata Group, following the death of Ratan Tata on Wednesday evening. Tata Trust is the umbrella organization that manages the functions of all 14 Tata Trusts.

Here are 10 things you should know about Noel Tata:

  1. Noel Tata was born in December 1957 to Novel Tata and Simone N Tata, a French-Swiss Catholic, and is the half-brother of Ratan Tata.

  2. He holds a degree from Sussex University (UK) and completed the International Executive Program (IEP) at INSEAD.

  3. Noel Tata is married to Aloo Mistry and together they have three children – Leah, Maya and Neville Tata – all of whom are actively involved in the family business. Leah Tata is Vice President of Indian Hotels Company. While Maya Tata is associated with Tata Capital, Neville Tata is part of Trent and the Star Bazaar leadership team.

  4. Noel Tata's most significant role prior to this new appointment was as Managing Director of Tata International Ltd, the trading and distribution arm of the group.

  5. Under his leadership, the company grew from $500 million in revenue to over $3 billion from 2010 to 2021, demonstrating its ability to drive growth in a highly competitive environment.

  6. As managing director of Trent Ltd, the retail arm of Tata, he expanded operations from a single store in 1998 to over 700 stores in various formats.

  7. Currently, Noel Tata is the Chairman of Trent, Tata International Limited, Voltas and Tata Investment Corporation. He is also the Vice Chairman of Tata Steel and Titan Company Limited.

  8. He also serves as a trustee on the board of Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, which together account for over 50 percent of Tata Sons' ownership. These two trusts are the administrative wings and can appoint people to the Tata Trust from each other.

  9. This makes Noel Tata the sixth chairman of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust and the 11th chairman of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust.

  10. Noel Tata was previously considered a potential candidate for chairmanship of Tata Sons, but the reins were handed over to Cyrus Mistry, Noel's brother-in-law. However, after Mistry's controversial exit, N Chandrasekaran, the then boss of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), became chairman of Tata Sons.
