Why Christina Ricci is happy about Jenna Ortega's success in “Wednesday.”

Former Addams family Star Christina Ricci said it's fun to see Jenna Ortega's success as the title character in the Netflix series “Wednesday.”

Ricci, of course, played Wednesday in the film version of The Addams Family in 1991 and reprized the role in the 1993 sequel Addams Family Values. These days, the prolific actor plays the lead role in the hit series Yellowjackets and just released her personal passion project, Christina Riccis Cat Full of Spiders Tarot Deck and Guide.

Ricci also played the role of Ortega's Wednesday's dorm mother in Season 1 of the blockbuster Netflix series, which gave her the opportunity to officially take on the role of the character – even though she never felt like the role was hers to begin with.

“I never thought of Wednesday as my character or as a part of it,” Ricci told me in a recent phone conversation about her tarot deck and guidebook. “I played this character and loved it. And yes, since I played her, I probably talk about this character once a week because people are so obsessed with the character itself, but I've never thought of it as something that belongs to me.”

Ricci said: “It’s fun to see another Wednesday”

The Addams Familyis of course based on the creation of cartoonist Charles Addams, which first appeared in The New Yorker magazine in 1938, according to the Tee & Charles Addams Foundation.

Before Christina Ricci and Jenna Ortega took their turn as Wednesday, Lisa Loring made the live-action version of the character famous when she starred The Addams Family ABC-TV series from 1964-66.

Ricci said she was flattered to be asked to play Marilyn Thornhill Wednesday and was excited to see Ortega put her own spin on the character. As a bonus, Wednesday reunited Ricci with director Tim Burton, with whom she had previously worked on the filmmaker's 1999 horror hit Sleepy Hollow opposite Johnny Depp.

“As a fan, I love watching Jenna, and as someone who loves the Wednesday character, it's fun to see another Wednesday – but I never felt like I personally owned the character.” said Ricci. “There have been other actresses who have played this character in the past and I think it's really fun to be associated with all of that and be in that world – and it was such a joy to be with Tim again to work together.”

Riccis Cat Full of Spiders Tarot Deck and Guide– which was published on Tuesday – is available in bookstores and online.
