Wildfire danger remains high in Massachusetts – NBC Boston

The dry, windy and warm temperatures increase the risk of wildfires, and several fires have already broken out across Massachusetts this week.

At Lynn Woods Reservation, the concern is similar to elsewhere – warmer than normal weather, dry leaves that have already fallen, thick brush already on the ground, and the wind and lack of rain.

It's the perfect recipe for a forest fire. And that's exactly what happened on Paxton Road in Holden on Wednesday.

White smoke could be seen under several trees. The Spencer and Townsend fire departments were called to help fight the fire.

And in Lynn, firefighters and residents are on high alert due to these conditions.

Lynn has 2,200 hectares of forestland – the majority of which is in the Lynn Woods Reservation. And firefighters say more than 400 hectares have burned in bushfires in the last two years, so they are being extra careful this week given the increased fire danger.

“With the drought, the current leaf litter and all of that, it’s something we need to pay attention to,” Lynn Fire Lt. said. Dennis Ring. “We have people who are out in the woods on a regular basis, hiking, biking, etc. Early detection and notification that there is a fire is huge.”

With no measurable rain forecast and a mix of seasonal weather and above-average temperatures, these concerns are likely to persist through the end of the month.
