Wolverhampton Wanderers: Virus hits squad before crucial game against Liverpool

The Wolves squad was hit by a virus ahead of Liverpool's Premier League visit on Saturday.

Goalkeeper Dan Bentley was ill last week and several of his teammates are now major doubts about the game against Molineux.

Coach Gary O'Neil, whose team is winless and bottom of the table, did not reveal who might miss the game but said some players will need to be assessed on Saturday morning.

“There are quite a lot of illnesses at the moment, some of them need to be checked to see how they are doing,” he added. “Many missed training today (Friday).

“Some of the boys will struggle tomorrow, whether they don’t quite make it or aren’t fit enough to compete. Sometimes things can get better within 24 hours.”

“We hope that all the boys who have received something in the last few days are doing well. But as the doctors told me, it is difficult to give a definitive answer at this point.”

Defender Yerson Mosquera is expected to miss the season with a serious knee injury so 20-year-old Alfie Pond, who made his full debut in last week's Carabao Cup defeat at Brighton, could start against the second-placed Reds.

The struggling Wolves are one of six teams seeking their first win of the season but O'Neil added: “I'm not worried at all. I’m looking forward to the next part of it.”

“First you have to accept where you are. So we accept where we are in this moment and then we fight with everything we can to make it better.”

“We have to put the group in the best possible position for Liverpool and then do everything we can to improve our points tally.”
