Yaroslav Askarov was sent to the AHL by the San Jose Sharks

Former Nashville Predators prospect goaltender Yaroslav Askarov has been assigned to the San Jose Sharks of the American Hockey League.

After being traded to the San Jose Sharks in August, Askarov appeared to be on his way to a starting role in his new organization. But the Sharks announced Friday that Askarov has been assigned to their AHL team.

Kevin Weekes, formerly of the NHL Network, reported in August that Askarov had requested a move from Nashville, in part because of a potential AHL contract.

The Predators did not confirm the trade request, but released a statement saying the goaltender is expected to be in training camp.

Four days later, Askarov was traded to San Jose for a 2025 first-round pick, center prospect David Edstrom and goalie prospect Magnus Chrona.

The 22-year-old Askarov struggled with an injury during the Sharks' training camp. He wasn't healthy enough to participate in practice, so this assignment is likely temporary until he can get up to speed and join the NHL club.

The Sharks signed Askarov to a two-year, $4 million contract extension starting in 2025-26. Askarov has played in three NHL games, all for the Predators. He made his debut on January 12, 2023 against the Montreal Canadiens.

In June, Predators general manager Barry Despite was asked when Askarov would be promoted to the starting lineup in the NHL.

“You are ready when you are ready, not when your agent says you are ready or when management says you are ready. Or the fans or the media,” said Despite.
